The course explains what allergies are, including the difference between food allergies, intolerances, and other common allergic conditions such as asthma and eczema. Common allergens that affect children in settings like nurseries, schools, and childminding environments, how to identify signs and symptoms of allergic reactions, including mild, moderate, and severe reactions and how to respond appropriately to allergic emergencies.

Also covered are, legislation and responsibilities around allergy awareness in childcare, including safe food handling and creating allergy management plans.

Awareness of allergies in children and young people 

On Completion

Upon completion, you will understand how to keep children safe by recognising and managing allergies effectively, be more confident in identifying allergic reactions, responding in emergencies and creating safe environments for children with allergies.

Eligibility Criteria
  1. You must currently live in a Non-Devolved Area of England or the Great London Area (GLA). If you live in GLA you must evidence you have permission to remain here for the next 365 days. You must have residency to be in the UK/EEA for the purposes other than study when enrolling onto the course.
  2. You must be over the age of 19 or older (on 31 August 2024) and be able to fully commit to this course.
  3. You must have the relevant ID to register for this course. (passport, visa/permit, birth certificate or driving licence and proof of address within the last 3 months)
  4. You must not have done this qualification at the same or higher level previously.

The course is delivered remotely and you will need a laptop or computer to be able to access and study on this course.
